Australian Stockmans Hall of Fame

Discover the history behind some of Australia's bravest and most intrepid explorers - the stockmen and Aborigines of early pioneering Australia at the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame. Over 60 per cent of the collection is on display whilst the remainder has formed a unique work in progress display. The curatorial area is housed behind a glass wall where you are able to view the many artefacts that are yet to be displayed. The themes cover exploration, discovery, settlement, development of Outback properties and industries, living in the Outback and the stock worker. The new touch screen technology also allows you to choose the level of information you wish to receive.

Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame is now in its 19th year of operation. Over one million people have visited this premier tribute to the men and women of the Outback. Be sure not to miss the 'Stockman's Rest' where you can enjoy a snack or relaxing cuppa and the Cattlemen's Bar and Grill for your complete dinner experience. The Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame is truly an iconic Queensland Outback experience.

Longreach Powerhouse Museum

The Longreach Powerhouse Museum showcases a unique blend of technical and local history within the Longreach Shire. The Powerhouse has the largest collection of rural generating machinery in Australia, featuring what were the largest gas reciprocating engines in the country. Plus the social history complex houses all the items from times gone by in the Longreach community.

Lochern National Park

This is Queensland's channel country, where flooding rains and devastating droughts are part of western Queensland life. All four species of Mitchell grass grow here. The Thompson River, its banks fringed with huge old coolibahs, stretches 20 kilometres through the park. A newly described subspecies of turtle, Emmott's short-necked turtle, lives in the park's waterholes. Remnants of European history reflect the innovative nature of early farming life.

Take binoculars to see vulnerable Major Mitchell cockatoos, red-tailed black-cockatoos and brolgas. Observe wildlife around waterholes and along the 40 kilometre Habitat drive. Go fishing (size and bag limits apply). Pitch your tent beside a billabong. See the shepherds' yards.

Qantas Founders Museum

The Qantas Founders Museum includes the historic 1922 Qantas hangar.

The complex houses historic photographs, memorabilia and multi-media interactive displays eloquently tell the inspirational stories of overcoming the problems of long distance travel in Outback Australia.

A Boeing 747-200, donated by Qantas Airways Ltd, forms a spectacular part of the museum's outdoor display. Guided tours are conducted daily for which bookings are essential. These tours provide visitors with an appreciation of the vision and achievements of the Qantas Founders, which is "that Qantas would one day become one of the world's greatest airlines."

Also now on offer is spectacular Wing Walk Tour for which closed in rubber soled footwear is essential. The very latest addition to the collection is the first ever Qantas jet passenger aircraft registered in Australia, the Boeing 707, faithfully restored over the past two and a half years by the dedicated team of volunteer engineers.

The original Qantas maintenance hangar, preserved as part of the museum, is one of Australia's earliest hangars. The hangar was the focus of the airline's operations during the 20s.
